Keep Daily Reading Part of Your Child's Summer Activities!

Summer break is almost here! While summer fun is at the top of your child’s to-do list, we encourage you to keep daily reading on your child’s list of summer activities. Like other skills your child is learning, such as hitting a baseball or learning a new cheer, reading needs to be practiced daily to maintain and strengthen reading skills.

Summer reading loss or “summer slide” happens when students don’t read over the summer.  “Summer slide” can mean that students who do not read over the summer months may need up to two months at the beginning of the school year to get back to their reading level from the end of the previous school year!

Our main goal for summer reading is to foster a love for reading, strengthen reading fluency and stamina, and build upon the idea that reading is important all year. Use the links below to learn more about your child's summer reading.

Summer reading information for current 8th graders

Posted Date: 5/26/24 (4:27 PM)

Dear Camden Fairview Rising 9th Grade Families:

Summer break is almost here! While summer fun is at the top of your child’s to-do list, we encourage you to keep daily reading on your child’s list of summer activities. Camden Fairview School District has provided books for each student in grades 8-11. These books and activities must be returned at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year.  Our main purpose for summer reading is to strengthen reading skills, foster a love for reading, and to front-load their background knowledge for the first unit of the upcoming 2024-25 school year. To help keep our students engaged in literacy throughout the summer, secondary students are strongly encouraged to read at least the book we have provided for them to read.

Like other skills your child is learning, such as hitting a baseball or learning a new cheer, reading needs to be practiced daily to maintain and strengthen reading skills. An extensive body of research shows that academic achievement is directly related to how much time children spend reading outside of school. This is in part because reading builds vocabulary and background knowledge.

Summer reading loss or “summer slide” happens when students don’t read over the summer.  “Summer slide” can mean that students who do not read over the summer months may need up to two months at the beginning of the school year to get back to their reading level from the end of the previous school year!

Based on the novel reading, there will be activities or questions for your child to complete. Students will submit their assignments to their 2024-25 literacy teacher by Wednesday, August 21, 2024.  We appreciate your support in ensuring your student is actively reading their novel and completing their summer assignment.

Rising 9th Graders' Summer Reading Assignments

Sincerely,

Camden Fairview Literacy Team

Summer reading information for current 6th and 7th graders

Posted Date: 5/26/24 (4:20 PM)

Dear 6th-7th Grade Camden Fairview Families:

Summer break is almost here! While summer fun is at the top of your child’s to-do list, I encourage you to keep daily reading on your child’s list of summer activities.

Our main goal for summer reading is to foster a love for reading, strengthen reading fluency and stamina, and build upon the idea that reading is important all year.  Getting books in your child’s hands is crucial, so here are a few options for obtaining copies of titles that may be of interest to your student. The Camden City Library (405 Cash Road), WalMart, Amazon, and other online resources like GetEpic.com.

Here are summer reading suggestions within our curriculum. Reading these books this summer is not required, but it will help your child be prepared for the first unit of study in the upcoming school year.

5th Grade (going to 6th Grade)

The Young LandlordsBud, Not Buddy, or The Secret Garden

6th Grade (going to 7th Grade)

Stand TallFair Weather, or Ribbons

7th Grade (going to 8th Grade)

Rules of the RoadThe House on Mango Street, or All Quiet on the Western Front

How can you make reading a natural fit for your summer?  Here are some tips:

  • Make sure your children read every day!  Make reading a part of your daily routine.

  • Help your child find books about things they are interested in. Sometimes the key to a child learning to love reading is simply finding the right genre, favorite book series, or author.

  • Make sure your child is reading books that are on their level - not too easy and not too hard.

  • Take your child to the library.

  • Encourage your child to try new genres of reading. Try magazines, graphic novels, or nonfiction books about topics they are interested in.

  • Talk to your child about what they are reading.

I hope your family has a great summer full of fun and reading!
